Kahautara Bridge Sites.

Ttie following report was pressnted at tba meeting of the Feathers ton Road Board on Saturday: Featherston Boad Board. I have the honor to report that, agreeably with your instructions 1 made a survey of two proposed sites for the Cart Bridge to be built across the Bnamahunga river at Eahautara. The total fall of the river bed between the two sites, a distance of 58 to 71 chains, is two to three feet, the velocity therefore at this point, when the lake is open and there is a flood in the river, will be about three miles an hour ; it would therefore be advisable to have as few piers as possible in the river bed The accompanying drawing shows the two sites surveyed aud the bridges proposed as suitable for the respective sites. At the lower site the banks are higher and better defined than at the upper, aud for a considerable distance above and below tbe sites the course is straight, and is therefore mnch less liable to change than at the upper where the banks are curved. The total length of tbe bridge shown at the lower crossing is 308 feet, and of that at the upper crossing 364 feet.' Appended are estimates at the cost of each I bridge. It is proposed to build the bridge of heart of totara timber and the best quality I wrought iron, the cirryiug cipaoitv to be 75 I pounds pet soperl'u-iil foot of deck.
