Greytown Borough Council

This Council met at the Borough Chambers on Monday night. Present—H. Udy, Esq., Mayor, (m the cbaitl, and Crs V&rnbam, Fabian, Smith, Maxton, Cotter and Udy, joo. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Clerk to the Wairarapa Hospital Board, applying for the Council’s proposition (£3 10s) toward the necessary expenses of the District Hospital Board. Mr Trotter forwarded bis resignation as Councillor, which was accepted. The °.mended statement of the Borongb Council’s liability toward the Charitable Aid Board was submitted, showing only about L 6 or L 6 required instead of LI 09 as at first appealed for. The Mayor explained that the authorities in Wellington had found that they bad made a mistake. REPORTS. The Overseer reported re certain works required in West Street in the rear of Mr CHiggins's premises and it was resolved that steps be taken to remedy the effects of the overflow at this point daring the wet season. The Works Committee’s report was read and confirmed, with permission to Mr A. J. Barnard to erect a verandah over the lootpath in front of his premises. The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted. MATARAWA bridge. In respect to the question of the Matarawa bridge, it was resolved that the Mayor call a pnblic meeting to discuss the question. It was also decided to take a poll of the ratepayers as to raising a loan under the Loans to Local Bodies Act. GENERAL BUSINESS. It waa resolved to grant the application of the Distno! Hospital Board for the Council V thare of necessary expenses. ft was resolved that the Cemetery question taud over until next meeting to allow the town Clerk to consult the Borough Council's solicitor. The ringer reported having impounded eleven head of cattle during the month, ami stated that the fence (runt and buck of Mr 0. Tioohurst’s place was in a bad state. On the motion of Mr Cotter it was resolved to give Mr E. Tioehurst (the owner of the property) notice that if he did not erect a proper fence within fourteen days, the Council would do it at his expense. On the motion of the Chairman seconded by Cr Cotter the Clerk was instructed to provide the names of all rate defaulters and tbs amounts due from them and lay the same on the table at the next meeting of the Council. Cr Fabian said after two or three years he thought the rates in arrears could be attached to the properties of defaulters and snob properties sold to pay same. Cr Cotter said that Councillors were personally liable by allowing rates to become in arrears.
