The Chairman Wairarapa South County Council - Mr.,—At a meeting of tba Mata* rawa settlers held on Tuesday evening last, u was almost unanimously resolved to proceed with the erection of a bridge forthwith. »d 4 Iwas authorised to communicate with i s local bodies interested. I have therefore the honor to request that your Conuoil will out of subsidy, grant £l6O towards the work, cs debit county funds at the rate of LlO.r* year. I have also to request that the County Clerk will forthwith place matters in Pa n for taking a poll of raising the loan-atMSf-ingthe Borough of Greytown.in the sum of L2O per annum, and the individual settlei* 1 in accordance with the encloeed list, leaving me to arrange with the Colonial Treaauret o accept the acreage rote in place of the valuation rate, ae I consider the valuation rate : quite inapplicable to such epecial loans as this. The Bead Board may accept the Fro. oerty Tax valnation as tbs basis of twtr valuation, but I have all along steadily protested against special loans being granted upon a Property Tax valuation, the reason , being that the wont properties (valued rightly enough at a low rate under P'°P er ‘T 1 tax), such as swamps and hills, benefit tne most by special improvement, and should , therefore be higher reted. I therefor* request that the Clerk draw out the special rate roll in the manner I suggest, altering my acreage* slightly wherein I am wrong, and I will .**■* 1 all reeponaibility if the loan ia not obtained. 1 1 consider that many of the Matarawa settler* have been asseased far too highly nnder tha Property Tax value, and I have advised them in a body to appeal next year to the Aeeess. ment Court and get their Valuations reduced. Some of them are rated at LU and LIS an acre, which I think monetrons and abeurd.
