Pedestrianism.
The 150 yard* race between ll utcbens, the English pedestrian, and Malone, the sprint runner, took place at Sydney on Jan 22, and resulted in a fictory for the former. Time 14 and 3-sths sec. The time given above is, if correct, the fastest on record for the event. Malone's record of 14 4-3 th sec at Botany, NSW, on May 7th, 1884, has hitherto been the be*', the next nearest being Watson, NSW, in 1877, 14 6-10 th gee, Paillips, Lon di n, 15sec ; Lowe, Cambridge, and George Forbes, Providence, Dec 20th, 1869. Hutchens came out from England on purpose to meet Malone, and considerable interest baa been felt by
peds all over the colonies as to the probable result ot the match. On the 24th instant a race between Hut chens and Malone for 250 yards took place. The former led all the way, and won easily. Time, 25fsec trom Sydney papers we learn that Hutchens was defeated on Jan 17 in a 150 yards race with C, Samuels, an aboriginal, who won the last but one Sir Joseph Ranks’ Handicap. The men got away well together, but for the first 20 yards Samuels did not get properly into his stride. From that point, however, he led the Englishman, and held his position until about a yard from the tape, when Hutchens made his rush. The latter, however, only decreased the gap by about half a yard, and Samuels breasted the tape that distance in front, the time being 14 9-10 sec. Samuels is about thirty years of age, and belongs to Queens* land.
