AN AMERICAN ON HOME RULE.

The London correspondent of t’ e ‘ Sen Francisco Argonaut,’ who has up to now been one of Mr Gladstone’s warmest admirers, admits that recen* events hare changed his mind. More important than his personal opinion is the appeal with which he winds up bis communication : “ Which class, think von, ought Americans, in common with all true, loyal Englishmen and Irishmen (there are some in Ireland), to favour, •ympatbise with and uphold ? The answer ought not to be a difficult one. Shall it be the clast who, educated, intelligent, and refined, understands and appreciates America aa a great and wonderfol country and does honor to bar citizens; the class whose people live a decent, respectable, honest, cleanly, law-abiding, contented life at home in their own country, the land of their birth ; the class which shows its affection for its native land by not leaving it ? Or, shall it be the class which, ignorant and priest-ridden from its cradle, comes in shoals, in hordes, in mobs to the United States, ragged and dirty, impudent, whisky-loving, quarrelsome, and lazy ; and which, under the guise of a too-easilv acquired citizenship (most mistakenly permitted) soon proceeds to take possession of America, to assume control of her politics, to elect her 1 (residents, governors, judges, and egislators ; to steal her public moneys, to corrupt her civil service, to boycott her native-born citizens and to fill her offices, her police force, and her prisons ? With which class ought Americana of the true American spirit to have feelings in common? One should not have to pause long for a reply. It is to the latter class that Mr Gladstone in dishonour of his record and in stultification of bis every peat act aa a patriot and statesman, wishes to band over Ireland. Of all people in the world should Americana, with their dear bought experience and their burnt fingers from tbe same lire, decline to give them either assistance or sympathy.
