The Fire Brigade Sports.
The Fire Brigade Sports to be held on Anniversary Day will no doubt be well patronised by the public of Greytown and neighbourhood, as the importance and usefulness of that body demands. Already prizes in kind and cash are being contributed in a most satisfactory manner, and one of the shop windows of Mr Wright, hairdresser, the nearest shop to the Town Hall, is filled with handsome contributions by the public in the way of trophies. There are among these, handsome silver teapots, vases, clocks, cabinet work, meerschaum pipes, and numerous other articles, both valuable aud useful, and there are promises of many more from a number of residents. We intend, next issue, for the her ’fit of the cause, to publish a list of the e-doles contributed as trophies, and also ti . names of the donors. The programme o. the sports for the '22 nd inst. can be found m another column. It is a moat attractive one, and will afford to the residents of Greytown and district an excellent day’s sport of a very dasir- . able and manly character, and, providing the weather is favorable, it may safely be predicted that a very large number of persons will patronise the occasion by their presence and eucomagcnieut. In speaking of the Voluuteer Firemen, an Australian journal remarks as follows ;—" The Volunteer Fireman as the defender of our homes from the great enemy •• tire,” is not credited with the same sentiments of patriotism and self sacrifice us is attributed to a soldier, yet his services are fur more useful, frequently noble, and always patriotic, aiming at the preservation of life and property at the risk of his own life, voluntarily, and for the public good. It is the grandest and noblest calling of the two, aud deserves to be better recognised both hy the Government and public, than baa hitherto been the ease.’' We quim agree with every word in this quotation, and we fed assured that our fellow-re- i loots will re-echo the sentiments.
