Backing Out.

Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Eobert Stout apparently agree with the statement of the American Politician “ Them’s my senterments, but if they don’t soot, they kin be altered.” Sir Julius and Mr Stout declared in several speeches during the recess that there must be additional taxation in the shape of increased Customs Duties. Well, in the Financial Statement no additional taxation is proposed and the Customs Tariff is left untouched. Fearing to lose office, Sir Julius and Mr Stout abandoned their previous intention to increase taxation, simply because they knew that if they tried anything of the kind they would be sent to the right about. The Government stands in fear of the House and of the country at large in this matter, so that they have not tried to put themselves into antagonism with either. We are heartily glad to find that Ministers have been frightened out of their original intentions.
