Football.

A football match took place on Saturday between the first fifteen of the Masterton Club ana the first fifteen of the Greytown Club. The match was rather an exciting one and resulted in a victory for Qreytown by two goals to nil. Much interest was taken by the public inthismatch who attended in good numbers, as among footballers it is considered the event of the season. Some of the Maaterton men were rather rough in their play, and it was remarked that they should study to play the same in a manner more in accordance with the established rules. Some slight accidents occurred but not of a serious nature, and on the whole, the event passed off with much good feeling. A return match will shortly be played at Masterton, and if all the Masterton team will kindly consider the rules of the game it will be in every respect the more enjoyable. We are satisfied that no Masterton foot* bailer would wilfully infringe the usages of the pastime, but some are liable to be led away by the exeitement.

A tastch between the aecond fifteen* of the two towns was played first, but neither side scored any points.

On Saturday afternoon last a number of the residents of Martinbonmgh turned out, and for a time indulged in a most enjoyable game of football. As this was more particularly a scratch game some individual of decidedly corpulent proportions had a tussle, and appeared to enjoy the excitement with the same zest as those who were spare built and wiry. The game proceeded merrily for about an hour, after which a few of the young men held a conference and determined to convene a meeting for Saturday week (22nd), for the purpose of instituting a club upon a permanent basis.
