The Starch Factory.

The fallowing letter has been handed to us by His Worship the Mayor of Greytown : Auckland, September 23, ISSS. H. UJy, Esq., Greytowu, Wairsrapa. Sib, —Noticing in the New Zealand Industrial Gazette that a meeting was held to start a Starch manufactory from potatoes, Ac., from what I can gather from the paragraph y.u intend claiming from Government the £3OO bonus. Perhaps you are not aware that a starch manufactory was some two years since started in Christchurch, and the arliclcpacked similar to corn dour, in fact was pat into competition with it—unsuccessfully. Messrs Wilkins of Christchurch can sell yon a large parcel cheap, there being no sale for it—a quantity was also despatched to Eng land—but was badly prepared and the result also was a failure. With potatoes at £4 at Home yon cannot compete with them. 1 must also point out to you that the laundry atarch for household use is made from rice. If you started a starch fictnry from corn it might do better as this article is largely used at Home for stiffening calicoes previous to printing. 1 may tell you I spent a lot of time and money in the South Island upon the produce so that I can speak from knowledge It would be a pity to go into it and then fail. Having sufficed myself I only think it neighbourly to give my experience. I can give you all particulars of manufacturing all kinds of starches and their best application, and shall be happy to give you any furthei information if it will further your views. I am, Ac., John Young. The Government would not grant the bonus for potato starch. It was, 1 believe applied for.
