Greytown Volunteer Soiree

When the weather yesterday k-cama so very uupropitious, grave doubts were i ntcrtained by those interested as to the succhh of this annual event ; 'nut at about eight o’clock all the forebodings wore dispelled by the largo attendance, even at that time gathered : and when, soon after, a very fair icpresentation of the Featherston Company arrived in the persons of Lieut A. Donald, Drill Instructor IW.ur, and a number of rank and file of that corps, it was self evident that the Volunteer Soiree of would be one to be remembered by the members and their lady friends and visitors for some considerable time to come. Indeed, the capacity of the Town Hall was taxed to its uttermost to accommodate the phalanx of dancers present. The Hon Surgeon and Hon Chaplain of the Greytown Volunteer Corps grace i the proceedings with their presence, and Captain Webster, Lieut D. Cameron, and Lieut Varuham, were, of course, there. The dresses of the ladies were rich and varied, and perhaps the most noticeable feature of the night s carnival was the kindred good feeling, und utter unexclusivcness that prevailed throughout. In fact, a more sociable, and at the same time select assembly, it would bo impossible to concievo. The refreshments supplied by the generosity of the ladies (wives, sweethearts and sisters of the volunteers), were as gold as the most ardent epicure could desire, and the dispensing of the sumo, was as usual in the able hands of Mr and Mrs Reynolds. The band was composed of the usual artistes, vi/.., Messrs Landqvist, Varnham and Kaisenberg, and the music wag perfect. Mr Jorgensen acted throughout the evening as M.C., with his usual success., At one time about 68 couples were engaged in one dunce, and altogether there could not have been less than seventy couples in all, with a number of onlookers aud friends in the gallery. Much praise and commendation is due to tho men of Featherston for turning out last night in such goodly numbers to assist so handsomely their brethren in arms m making tho event so successful, a compliment which will no doubt be returned, we Impe, with interest. In addition to the volunteer* a number of ladies came from Featherston.
