S. Luke's Church, Greytown

The annual general meeting of parishioners of St. Luke’s Church was held in the vestry room on Monday evening last, the llev. W. T. Western in the chair. The balance sheet and report for past year were read and adopted. The report stated that there was a decrease in the offertories; the special offertory for the hospital amounted to il.'i Is Id ; the concerts, carried out by a sub committee consisting of the llev. Western, Messrs Gray, Wyett, M. Varnham and Dr Spratt, were very successful and netted £lO 8s ; the thunks of vestry were duo to these gentlemen. The ladies of the congregation had been working hard during the year at weekly “ Bees ” organised by Mrs Western, and in May last held a sale of worK which realised £lO ; the amount it is understood is to go towards the liquidation of tho debt on tho church. It is hoped that a considerable sum will bo raised by means of these sales. The state of the general church fund has not improved, tho assessment being considerably in arrear. A new departure has been made in enlisting the ladies of the congregation ns collectors, and it is hoped this may have a beneficial effect. Tho thanks of the vestry are due to Miss llirschberg and other ladies fur playing; the harmonium, also to Mr Porritt, conductor, and the members of the choir, and to the lay readers—Messrs Wood and Guff ; also to the tSuudny School Teachers, more especially Mrs Western, who has kindly superintended during the year. It having been stated that several lads and young men were in the habit of attending church aud behaving in an unseemly manner, it was resolved that if the offence was repeated the vestry he requested to proceed under the Police Oilences Act, against the offenders. Tho names of the parties referred to are known. Tho election of officers resulted as follows Clergyman’s churchwarden, Mr Cuff; parishioner's churchwarden, Mr Wood ; vestry, Messrs Wyett, Porritt, Gray, Brooks, Skcet, Drs Boy aud Spratt. A sub-committco consisting of Messrs Porritt, Wyett, Gray, Wood and Black was appointed to endeavour to arrange for the purchase of a new organ for tho church, similar to that now in the Cttlciu-n church. A vote of thanks to choir terminated the meeting.
