A match between the second fifteens of Carterton and Greytown took jilaco at the former town on Saturday laet. Wm. Udy captained the Greytown team, and H. Tully the Carterton. The Carterton captain seemed rather young for such a responsible position, but his superior knowledge of the game was a matter of some importance among players who were deficient in this respect. Carterton kicked off, and Greytown in returning the ball carried the play towards the Carterton goal. After a good deal of scrimmaging, the Carterton forwards, by dashing play, in which Koid, Smith, and li. Fairbrothcr distinguishing themselves, carried the hall well towards the Greytown goal, and eventually Greytown was forced down. Some good runs, however, carried the hall to the other end, when half time was called. The Carterton players in this spoil played in a manner that was highly gratifying to their friends and surprising to their opponents, who did not expect to sec so young a club turn out a team against which Greytown was barely able to hold its own. In the second spell Wm, Udy kicked off and the ball being well followed up it was quickly kicked into touch about ton yards from the Carterton goal lino. A Greytown player was about to throw the ball in, when it was noticed that the inside umpire was about three yards forward. The umpire stepped hack a little, and holding up his stick the ball was thrown in, at the same time that the Carterton players wore requesting him to step further back. The Greytown captain got the ball and carried it over the lino. After some discussion and on appeal to the referee the try was allowed. On the ball being brought into play again A. Beard kicked it through some of the advancing Carterton forwards who were close on him, Gamblin dribbled the bail over the goal line and W. Humphries dribbling it still further, got a try. Ou the ball being kicked into play, A. Udy soon got hold of it, made ft good run and passed to Beard, who took it up within a few yards of the Carterton goal lino, and after some loose play, Wm Udy got the ball and though collared by two or three of the Carterton backs, forced his way through and touched the ball behind the goal lino. Ob appeal the referee decided that the ball was not held. Tinga took the kick and made a very good shot the wind just taking the hall outside the post Greytown thus won the match by three tries to oil. Mr We*bster for Greytown, and Mr Dempsey for Carterton, acted as umpires, Mr W. F. Jackson being referee. Besides the players already mentioned, J. Jackson by some good runs, and Welch by dribbling, (both Greytown), Kutlicrford and C. Saywell, by collaring and running (Carterton), did good work for their sides.
