Citizens’ Plain and Fancy Dress Ball.

This annual affair, which Ins been carried out for some years past, has become exceedingly popular, and the scene of gaiety at the Grey town Town Hall last night proved that there was a large amount of interest centered in the hall, several present coming from Carterton, Fcathcrstou, and other places in the Wnirarnpa. It there was any disappointment it must have been among tlnwo who did not avail themselves of the opportunity of being present. From first to last there was not hitch of any kind, and the large company of dancers in their varied, pnttvand grotesque costumes, formed n most outer taining and everchanging scene. This was enhanced by the decorations carried nut ly an energetic and hard working committee comprising the followihg :—Messrs it. P, Loasby, G. .tones, 11. Plight, J. Fuller, D. Cameron, H. Humphries and A. 1., Webster. Tl.ev had covered the wells with lia ;s and banners and evergreens of many descriptions, and in doing so showed plainly that they knew how to produce a good effect. In addition to this there were the strains of music supplied by Messrs Lundqvist (violin), Kaisenberg (piano), Varnlmm (cornet), and Barnard (flageolet) ; and last, but not least by a very long way, were the refreshments, so tempting in thoir display, supplied by Mrs Maxtou and under the superintendence of Mr and Mrs Reynolds and Mr J. Lewis, who were, as usual, most obliging to the guests. Of Mrs Maxton's spread we must say wc have never seen anything to excel it in Groytown. There was everything that the most fastidious could wish, and the whole laid out in first class style. To describe the dresses of the evening is an undertaking that a reporter enters upon with diffidence. To get a complete list of the many characters may not appear dilllcult, bnt there is the possibility that among such a large company one or two individuals may escape moutiou. It was pleasing to observe how busily the ladies bad been at

work in preparing costumes.
