MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting of Te Awamutu District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present: Messrs G. S. Clarke (chairman), G. F. Smith, Ml. G. Galloway, G. W. Hairs, H. A. Burchell, J. A- Maxwell, A. J. Sin- > clair, G. B. Melrose, and J. G. Wynynrd (seqretary). phe headmaster, Mr A. J. Shepherd, Vfas in attendance. • Mir H. E. G. Wilson was granted leave of absence owing to indisposition.

Before routine business was proceeded with the chairman referred to the recent death of Mrs Marston, an indefatigable worker in all school efforts. The school had lost a really good friend. Committeemen stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with the bereaved husband and family, and then it was decided to forward a letter conveying the tenor of the resolution recorded to Mr Marston. The secretary reported that no reply had yet been received from the "Board in reply to the request for renewal of some decayed piles at the infant school. The headmaster thought the Board’s architect would visit Te Awamutu shortly. No reply has yet been received to the, Committee’s representations in favour of all children up to standard three attending the local school being afforded treatment at the local dental clinic. The secretary, local Board of Education, wrote that application for a temporary additional assistant in the secondary department had been made to the Department, but the reply was that the application could not be entertained at present. It was decided to make application for a temporary assistant for the primary department, in accordance with a promise made earlier in the year. The opinion was expressed that hardship was imposed not only on the present staff but also on the scholars.

The headmaster stated that the attendance in the primary department was now 380, six new scholars having joined last week; but the total was not yet as high as at the end of 1930. Many of the older children left at the end of the year. The ; chairman reported that the subcommittee had arranged with Mr H. Robinson to assume the duties of caretaker.—Approved. Correspondence was received from the Board of Education that it could procure a re(-conditioned Remington typewriter at £l6 10s for school purposes,' but that it could not provide a subsidy toward the cost. The headmaster’s report showed that the primary department roll for the past year was '382, with an average attendance of 345; in the secondary department the figures were 98 and 95. For the past quarter the figurfis were 348 average in the primary department and the roll at the end of the term 376. : It was reported that the issue of hot cocoa had been inaugurated at the lower school. Reporting on the school grounds, the headmaster said that last week six men and this week four men were working under No. 5 unemployment scheme, and had done quite a lot o+ work. The levelling of the ground in front of the new school was almost completed, while other useful work had been done in digging and cleaning up the banks. The caretaker had also done some work round the ornamental trees. The cleaning was being done fairly satisfactorily, and the caretaker was very willing. The main school was being renovated inside, and a price had been submitted for the renovation of the outbuildings. Mr Shepherd reported that the following time-table, at the instance of the Board, was now being observed: Mornings: Commence at 9 .15; interval 10.45 to 10.55, lunch 12.10 p.m. Afternoons: Commence 1.10; interval 2.5 to 2.15, close 3.10 p.m. The financial statement was presented and approved. Approval of the use of the school football field as an emergency area for Waipa Rugby Union games, ir which the High School team is„ engaged, was recorded.
