MONTHLY MEETING.

GENERAL BUSINESS TRANSACTED.

The monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Co'Ujnty Council was held on Wednesday. Present: Crs. F. Potts (chairman), Ingham, Sanson, Thomson and Hill.

'Leave of absence was granlted Crs. J. B. Teasdale and W. Irvine. It was resolved that the Council repudiate any liability in regard to Mr McKenzie's claim for sheep poisoned owing to eating tutu which had been cut and left lying on the Honikiwi road by the County's roadmen. The County solicitor, Mr F. P. Phillips waited on the Council with regard to certain matters on which, his opinion had, been sought and the meeting went into committee. Mr Phillips having retired the Council resumed in open meeting. The agreement as between the Otorohanga Counlty Council and A. A. Smith (sawmiller) with regard to the maintenance of the road between the sawmill at Toa's and town was discussed.

The agreement is to the effect that the sawmiller may use a Unitey truck (estimated to weigh 30cwt) for carting his timber. That the sawmiller pays to the Council a sum of 4d per 100 super feet on all timber carted by him over the metalled portion of the roads as from April Ist to March 31st, 1927. Such payment to be accepted by the "Council in full satisfaction of any claims it may have for damage caused to the said metalled road by the extraordinary traffic. The said, royalty shall be computed on the royalty paid by the sawmiller to the Native and other owners of the bush during the preceding {three months should default be made in payment for one month then the Council may by notice terminate the agreement and recover any sums due under same.

It was resolved that the agreement be duly signed by the chairman and Cr. Irvine and the County seal affixed.

A letter from Korakonuji selttlers asking that a loan be raised for metalling Walker's road was read, and brought up a discussion as to the advisability of obtaining a loan in preference to a scheme for the work being done by- the settlers -themselves a s had been done by Messrs J. Kirk and Frazer, and so save the cost of the loan, and a saddling of another mortgage on their properties. Cr. .Thomson said he thought if he and Cr. Teasdale interviewed the settlers concerned they might be persuaded to do as suggested.

The engineer said he thought it would be a matter of 12 chains only for each ratepayer in the proposed special rating area. The matter was left to Cr. Thomson. Mr J.. T f Young wrote thanking the Council for expressions of appreciation of his past services as a Councillor and wished! the 'Council every success in the conduct of Counlty affairs. The application of Mr H. A. Lurman for assistance towards making a crossing into his property so as to obviate the damaging of the road embankments by his stock, was held, over until next meeting. The District Traffic Manager of the N.Z. Railways wrote calling attention to the fact that the cross arms at level crossings at Te Kawa and south of Otorohanga required repainting—a work the Council was responsible for. This matter was left to the engineer to have attended to. It-was resolved that £lO be voted to the Waitomo Power Board, as a donation . towards. the cost of the "turning on" ceremony in connection with the electric light power, at which ceremony Ithe Minister of Agriculture was present. ' " . It was decided that in the event of a conference between' the " Kawhia County Council and Otorohanga County Council, regarding the Ngutunui road subsidy from the Highways Board, the chairman and engineer represent the Council. Accounts having been passed for payment the Council adjourned.
