There was a scene of remarkable enthusiasm at the 'Town Hall this afternoon, when a memorable gathering of citizens assembled to do honour to S James Gunson, who for ten years had. served them with marked distinction, and consummate ability as Mayoi o this citv. That the citizens recognised the services rendered by Sir James was exemplified in the fact that vo u - tary subscriptions to a fund tor the making of a presentation wore verjr speedily built up to a total of £I9OO. Sir James, however, was against th spending of this amount on * presentation, and so a silver model of the War Memorial Museum, for which he laboured in good earnest, was executed, for him, and a baby grand piano was purchased for Lady Gunson, who has in every way .been a helpmate to her husband in connection with his cma activities. The balance of the fund, amounting to £I2OO, has. with the: concurrence of Sir James, been devoted tothe foundation of a Sir James Gunson. Scholarship for, agriculture at tne University. It is Understood that this sum will be supplemented by a £ tor £ subsidy from the Government, and. v thus provide a scholarship to the valu of £125 a year. ; The presentation was made by tne Mayor, Mr George Baildon, who alsoread the illuminated address which accompanied it. _ In making the presentation, Mr Baudon eulogised at length the persona qualities and civic worth of the exMayor, and also stressed the spiendid services of Lady Gunson as chief hostess of the city and as a helper m social and philanthropic works, th& Mayor’s remarks being enthusiastically supplemented by Sir Edwin Mitchelson. .
