SALE OF JERSEY CATTLE
COW R*EALISES FOUR HUNDRED GUINEAS. A highly-successful sale of the Otlerburn Jersey herd, owned by Midhs Mears Brothers at Walton, was Conducted by the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company on Thursday last. Buyers were present from all parts of the province, .and that, long purses would be needed was soon made evident, the first cow being sold for 65 guineas, while her heifer calf realised 30 guineas. The top price was 400 guineas, which Mr F. W. Walters, of Waitoa, paid for the imported cow, Goodwood Ruby. Bidding commenced at '2OO guineas, and rapidly reached the 300 guineas mark. A spirited duel between Mr Walters and Mr H. Watkin, of Takanini, resulted in the former having the cow knocked down to him. The same buyer also bought a heifer calf from the same cow at 70 guineas. The next best price was 220 guineas for Fox's Freda, also purchased by Mr Walters, who also secured her calf at 50 guineas. Quite a number of other cows were sold for over 100 guineas, while the average price paid for 22 cows was 87 guineas,. four dry cows averaging 30 guineas, and nine heifers 37 guineas. There was remarkable competition for this season's calves, bidding reaching as high as 70 guineas, While the.average price was 30 guineas. The three-year bull, Blonde's Golden Sultan, was sold for 60 guineas to Mr-J. Colson, of Waihou.. The older bull. Otterburn Sultan, was jaot sold, .being passed in, while younger bulls sold at from 30 to 41 guineas.
