ROADS.

CLASSIFICATION OF RIDINGS

The necessity for the classification of, county roads as a result of the damage by heavy motor traffic was mentioned by Cr. T. H. Henderson at a meeting of the Waikato County Council yesterday. Mr Henderson said that unless the rates were raised ho could not see his way to maintain the roads in the Rototuna Riding. Heavy loads were being carried over the roads and they could not possibly'stand up to it. He considered that all heavy traffic should be prohibited from using the roads in his riding after the end of the week. Mr T. Hinton remarked that if the. weather continued fine it would be unnecessary to prohibit heavy traffic. If there was a break in the weather, however, the roads would soon tear up> and the restrictions should be imposed. The chairman added that it would be advisable to have a universal classification of roads Over the whole county. It was finally resolved to debar heavy traffic using Waikato County roads from the end of the present month. No load was to exceed four tons, including the vehicle. A proviso was added that in the event of bad weather heavy traffic was liable to be prohibited seven days from date. I The following classification of roads in the various ridings was adopted: Rototuna Riding, fourth class (limited to two tons); Taupiri, third class (limited to four tons); Ruakura Riding, Hamilton-Morrinsville road, third class; remainder of riding, fourth class.
