WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

GENERAL BUSINESS TRANSACTED.

Cr D. S. Reid presided at the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council at Ohaupo on Monday. There were also present: Crs W. McGee, C. M. Alexander, IA. H. Storey, S. C. Macky, W. McCarthy, J. >S. Fisher, H. Reilly, R. G. Speake, A. Livingstone, E. F. Peacocke, and S. Saulbrey. The manager, Farmers' Auctioneering Company, advised that his firm was prepared to undertake the examination of applicants for motor drivers' licenses in the neighbourhood of Hamilton.

The clerk reported that he had made similar arrangements for Cambridge and Te Awamutu districts. The assistant-under-secretary, Internal Affairs Department, advised, relative to the proposal to alter the boundaries of Te Rapa drainage district, taht the commission recommended that an alteration of the boundaries be made, but had modified the area as prayed for in t'he original petition. A copy of the commission's finding was forwarded.

Mr F. G. Foss, Hamilton, asked to have a culvert and some filling placed at his gateway before the wet weather set in.—'Declined.

Mr E. Egan, Whatawhata, wrote: " The cattle that are allowed to run on the county roads have been causing me considerable annoyance. They are continually damaging and breaking my fences. At the present time they are breaking my fences and damaging my haystack. Is it not possible for the County Council to have these cattle cleared from our roads?" It was mentioned by councillors that this was an ever-ipcreasing trouble in many parts of the 'county, and it was often difficult to obtain impartial and conscientious rangers. The opinion was advanced that the police might be induced to co-operate with rangers and local bodies so as to promote prosecutions against owners of straying stock. Counsel for Mrs M. O'Brien, Hamilton, wrote that his client did not agree with the Council's contention that she was not taking a reasonable view of the Council's action in turning water from the road through her property. The drain must be closed at once, or damages would be claimed.—Received. Mr P. C. Threlkeld, Russell,' wrote saying he was probably the heaviest ratepayer in the Roto-o-Rangi district and in view of this he asked for improvement to his access road. The road gutters were blocked, causing the storm water to flow over a culvert and block wheeled traffic—Referred to riding member and engineer for attention. The secretary, Ohaupo School Committee, asked that a load of metal be laid at the entrance to the school grounds.—Agreed to. Mr W. Willoughy, Jun., Kaipaki, sought permission to take a few loads of gravel from the Council's pit in Walker's Gully to enable him to concrete his cowshed floors.—Agreed to on the usual conditions. \A request that the road recently laid through Mr Wm. Gibson's property, off theTuhikaramea road, be formed and sanded immediately, was received from two Te Rapa land owners, Mrs A. B. Blackburn and Mr J. T. Chesterton. —Referred to chairman and engineer. The Minister of Lands advised that the Minister for Public Works had agreed to assist towards the repair of the road giving access to the Wharepuhunga soldiers' settlement by paying t'he remaining amount of £2OO to make up the estimate of £350. An authority to expend this amount was being issued to the Council.—Received, the chairman remarking that the grant was a satisfactory outcome of the representations made. The Minister of Railways notified that he did not consider it necessary to change the 'accounting system from Otorohanga to Te Awamutu for traffic to Te Mawhai from the northern stations. . .. ,„ Councillors were very appreciative of the Te Awamutu station staff's courtesy in advising country settlers who have goods arriving at flag stations. Messrs McOarter and Preston, instructed by Mr B. Sudden, Pokuru, requested the Council to insist upon compliance of all parties to the agreement re drain clearing and maintenance. The Council is asked to call upon Mr J. C. Corboy to clear the points between Al and the arbitrary point D, and to clear out the drain between the points C. B. and D to the point where Mr Corboy's agreed area junctions with the area agreed to be cleared out by Mr A. W. Jones. Delay would accentuate the present trouble owing to the wet season approaching. The chairman said that most of the trouble appeared to have been caused hy the inaction of Mr Jones. (However, he would not like to comment further, as he believed the matter was to come before the Magistrate on Thursday. Jones had appealed against the Council's action. The chairman said that actually the Council had moved thre_e or four months ago, but delays were caused, and now the help of the Magistrate was to be invoked. _ Cr Alexander moved that Mr Buaden's letter be referred to the county solicitor.— Agreed to. _ •'...> The County solicitors advised that the proclamation baking Iremonger's road, in the Kakepuku riding, has new been issued. The road is dedicated as a public road. The Council must now apply to the Native Land Court to assess compensation payable to the native owners.—Approved. Mr A. Karl, chairman of the Rotomanuka Drainage Board, asked the Council to assist 'his Board in the lowering by two feet of the pipes crossing the road between Walsh and Kite's corner. —Agreed to.
