A SPORT'S CENSUS
STATISTICIAN’S RETURN,
'The following table is furnished by the Government statistician of .particulars of organisations and membership of sports bodies in New Zealand:—
, Horse racing (galloping), 181,244; trotting, 6797; tennis, 19,351; bowling, 15,055; swimming 6668; cricket 10,334; croquet, 2480; rowing, 1916; shooting, 1100; polo, 160. There are 2998 school members (male) included in the cricket total, and 789 school members (male) included in the swimming total. (Horse racing occupies the premier position as regards numerical strength, 25,044 persons being shown as claiming membership in the various racing and trotting clubs. This represents an increase of 1640 persons over the figures returned last year. The omission of any reference to football, New Zealand's national pastime in point of popularity, is peculiar. It is a fairly general contention that the number of members of football clubs far exceeds the total of any of the sports enumerated in the statistician’s list.
