It was reported in connection with the Rotoma Lake shooting tragedy that a strong attachment existed between the deceased Olsen and the girl, Mary Moors. It is now stated by Mr Moors, father of the dead girl, that this as not. so, and that there is no truth in the statement that Olsen had openly declared his Tove for his girl to her father, who had pointed out the great disparity between their ages. Mr Moors says further that his daughter caught the train south on the Friday night, and not on the Sunday. Two young men, Lionel H. Keeper and Osborne Wright, were introduced to the presiding Justices at the local Court yesterday morning by Constable Doyle as “birds of passage.” He charged Keeper with using obscene language in Roache Street the previous afternoon, and Wright with drunkenness at the same time. Both men pleaded guilty. Wright was convicted and fined 10s, while his companion was convicted and fined £2 for the misuse of his lingual powers. He was also ordered to leave the town or he would be in. danger of apprehension again. Keeper took the hint, paid his fine, and made tracks for some other place unknown to the Te Awamutu -police.

This is what a contemporary says of the forthcoming race meeting at Te Awamutu: The loaned permit which has been sanctioned the Waipa Racing Club, will be dispensed at Te Awamutu on Wednesday, May 27th, and there is every warranty for strong support to be extended to the fixture by owners and by the sporting public. In giving away £940 in stakes the executive of the club has displayed a keen desire to cater for horses to the best extent possible and a well balanced programme has been drawn up. The Ngaroto Hurdles of £IOO (13 miles) is for horses that have never won a hurdle race to the value of £l5O or over at the time of entry, which stipulation should bring about an even class field of liberal size. The Welter Handicap of £IOO will be decided over seven furlongs and has a minimum weight of 8.0. The club has introduced an innovation for this course in two steeplechase events and as the big jumping season has just been entered on there should be no dearth of candidates. The Hack Steeplechase of £IOO will be over two miles, while the Te Awamutu Steeplechase Handicap of £230 -will extend to two miles and a half and both promise to provide interesting contests. The Woodstock Stakes Handicap of £2OO, which will be decided over one mile and a quarter will be the principal open distance event of the card, while the Arapuni (Handicap of £l2O will cater for the class sprinters at the meeting The Hairini Hack Handicap of £BO (minimum 8.0) over seven furlongs should attract another useful field.
