THE DEADLOCK

HOUSEHOLDERS ’AWAITING | , RESULTS, f

:.>• The resignation of Seyeq of the ii'ine newly-elected members 'of the Te Aw’amutu , District High School Committee within a few hours of their election on Monday evening has been an all-ab-sorbing topic of- conversation in' the community ' during'the; past two. or thtee days, and doubtless many of our readers are very keen to know the latest developments.. We are unfortunately not in a position to state them for the reason that the seven gentlemen (or at least those of the seven who have been questioned on our behalf) are uncommunicative. We are able to state that they have held meetings (not as school committeemen, of course), but the decisions arrived at there have not been announced. On Thursday afternoon some of them received replies from the Board of Education asking that they withdraw their resignations. It is also stated that Mr Battson, the former chairman of the School Committee, has asked them to do so; but just what the decision was is not available for publication. The secretary of the old Committee, Mr G. 0. Jourdain, has been in communication with the Board notifying them of the inability of the newly elected committee to function consequent upon seven out of the nine having tendered their resignations. He has asked to be advised of the Board’s will in the matter, and also asked for instructions regarding certain other matters. It is expected that, if the resignations are not withdrawn, the Board will appoint Mr Jourdain to convene another meeting of householders to fill the seven vacancies. As nominations for the vacancies would presumably close seven days prior to the householders’ meeting interested folk will have ample opportunity to attend. How much time will be allowed for the receipt of nominations to fill the vacancies is not known. As stated, the seven gentlemen may decide to withdraw their resignations, and then the Committee can function. The whole affair is regrettable, for there is no advantage to the school in such a dispute, but, as we said before, the precipitate action of the seven members of the old Committee occasioned it.
