SCHOLARSHIP ANOMALY.
MOVE FOR A LOWER GRADE. DUNEDIN. Friday. A ca.se was reported to the High Schools Board of John G. Warrington, a free place holder, who has won a junior national scholarship and also the Harrop scholarship. He had decided. Air Sifley said, to relinquish the. National scholarship and hold the Harrop scholarship of £25. He was informed that under the Department's regulations if he retained the Harrop scholarship he would have to pay fees amounting to ten guineas. Mr Sidey had communicated with the Minister asking if the regulation did not require revision. The Minister, in reply, mentioned that previous holders of the Harrop scholarship had relinquished the free places. If the Minister’s contention was correct the Harrop scholarship trustees were finding ten guineas for the State .out of £25.
Air Sidey added that if they made the scholarship £ls instead of £25 a boy would actually get. more from it, for the regulation provides that where a scholarship is over £ls the holder has to pay full fees; if less he does not pay fees. He pointed out that if the trustees lowered the standard the scholarship would not come under this regulation, and it would be possible for scholarship holders to obtain free palces too.
The matter was referred to the committee, which was authorised to take legal advice.
