SHOPKEEPERS' ENQUIRY
At a meeting of Te Awamutu shopkeepers recently the desire was expressed that early arrangements be concluded in respect to the Christmas and New Year holidays, and, if possible, that the half holiday be varied that week so that Christmas eve could be observed on the proper date. It so happens that with Christmas Day falling on a Monday the late night on Friday was suitable neither for shopkeepers or the purchasing public, particularly as it would break away with old established customs. It was therefore desired to make such arrangements as the law would allow to enable the suspension of the Saturday half-holiday during Christmas and New Year weeks.. An inquiry was made to the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association whose secretary now advises: "In regard to the Christmas holidays you would be quite within your rights in altering the half holiday from Saturday to another day in that week provided notice of the change was given to the localMnspector of ! Factories. Saturday could be observed as the late night as Christmas Eve, but the Act only allows shops to remain open until 10 p.m. and not 10.30 p.m. as you suggest. In the following week if the shop is closed and no assistants employed on Monday and Tuesday no half holiday at all need_ be allowed inl, that week, and Saturday could again be observed as the late night up to 10 p.m."
This communication is to be considered by the appointed committee which has to do with the arrangement of holidays at Te Awamutu, and announcements will be made in due season.
