SUMMARY OF BUSINESS

At the Te Awamutu Magistrate's Court on Thursday, before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., the following cases were dealt with: — Maintenance.

James Sloan, barman at the Te Awamutu Hotel at £3 10s a week and found, pleaded guilty to arrears of maintenance in respect to his two children, in the care of the State, at 12s a week each, totalling £54 2s. Sloan stated that he was contributing to his wife and child in Wellington at the rate of 25s per week. He was ordered to pay £2 a week to the court here, the magistrate remarking that that would leave him 30s a week to send to hia wife, and that enquiries would be made regarding that.

Samuel Dawson, a barber in receipt of £5 a week, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order in respect to his child to the extent of £l6 15s arrears. He stated he was paying £2 5s a week board at the hotel, and had previous debts to cancel. He was! ordered to pay £2 a week, failing which he would be imprisoned for one month. Chargie of Vagrancy. Bertram John Bachelor, charged with being an idle person without means of support, pleaded guilty. Constable Mahoney gave evidence that since his discharge Bachelor had done nothing but hang round Kihikihi hotels. Harvesting was- to be obtained, but Bachelor did not take it. He had no means. Bachelor said he wanted work but could not get it. Sergeant Doyle gave evidence that Bachelor had reported to him, and he had guaranteed him an account for £2 and given him permission later to go to Auckland. Bachelor had been drinking, was absolutely lazy, and unwilling to work. Bachelor's statement that he had a job to go to at the sawmill on the Hamilton road was proved correct, and the case was adjourned for a month. Judgment by Default. Judgment by default was given in the following cases: A. Young and Co. (Mr C. G. Downes) v, W. J. Smith, for £lO 5s lOd, court costs 16s, solicitor's fee,£l Is; R. M. Finlay (Mr Hawkins), v. E. Pope, for £1 10s, court costs 21s; Brown and McDonald (Mr J. Oliphant) v. J. Lamport, £2l Is 6d, court costs £1 10s, witnessed expenses 16s, solicitor's fee £2 12s.

Orders, on Judgment Summonses; Orders on judgment summonses were issued in the cases of T. S. Ferguson (Mr McCarter) v. A. Bishop, to pay £l3 15s 6d and £1 Is solicitor's fee forthwith, or 15 days' imprisonment; Thomas Spear (Mr C. G. Downes) v. A. Geo. St. Clair Isbister, to pay £l3 15s forthwith, or 15 days' imprisonment; J. H. Thomas (Mr C. G. Downes) v. Joseph Adams, to pay £33 14s and solicitor'si fee £1 14s 6d forthwith, or 35 days' imprisonment.
