ASIATIC IMMIGRATION.
LEGISLATION TO BE INTRO-
DUCED. The influx of Asiatics was the subject of a question put to the Prime Minister in the House on Thursday by Mr H, Poland (Ohinemuri). During the last six months, said Mr Poland, at least 400 Chinese and 180 Hindus had landed at the port of Auckland. The Asiatics were entering the Dominion in largely increased numbers, and threatened to be a serious menace to the social life of the community. The Returned Soldiers’ Association had rightly taken up the matter, and the Government ought to indicate its attitude. Mr Massey replied that some weeks ago the Government had given instructions for the drafting of a Bill dealing with Asiatic immigration. This bill would be submittedto Parliament in due course, probably within two or three weeks.
