CENTRAL H.B, SUB-UNION AVIN FOR OTANE; DRAW FOR OLD BOYS. Only two games in the senior competion of the Central H.B. Sub-union were played on Saturday, and the results make the final issue very interesting. Prior to Saturday Otane and Old Boys were running level, but whilst the former had only two games to play Old Boys had three. Otane were successful in their match against Rangers but Old Boys were only able to secure a draw against Takapau. A combined team selected from the clubs not interested in the competition was pitted against the Wellington Marist Old Boys at Central Park, and suffered defeat by 35 points to 11. . Playing conditions were ideal. SENIORS. OTANE DEFEAT RANGERS. Playing on the Otane ground Rangers suffered defeat by Otane by 13 points to three, in a game full of interest. The teams were as under:— Rangers—Hill, Smith, AVard, Haldane, Nepi, French, Blake, Williamson, R, Ross, AV. Ross, A. Rasmussen, M. Rasmussen, Henderson, Cossar, Morrison. Otane—Higgs, Beale, J. Scrimgeour, Smith, Mason, Phillips, Riach, Stephens, Green, Mundell, Beale, s R. Serimgeour, J. Hislop, Burgess, f AArilliams. ' The game was very even in the first spell, and a.t half-time Otane were leading 3—o, a fine penalty goal by Green. I Early in the second spell Beale touched down for Otane and Green enhanced. Then Green scored well ] out and converted his own try, thus ( being responsible for 10 of the 13 points scored. Nearing the end of j the game AV. COM- i BINED TEAM. A special attraction at Centrali i Park was a match between the Wellington Marist Old Boys and a combined team selected from the Waipukurau, AVaipawa, and Te Aute senior teams. The visitors had all the best of the game, and the home team, although staging several sparkling movements, never looked like winning, being beaten by combination and pace. For Central Jamieson and Petersen scored tries, whilst Dew converted t one and kicked a penalty goal. , Mr Smales refereed. ( ' i HAWKE’S BAY v. AVELLINGTON. , CLOSE FINISH. Playing the first match of their southern tour at AA'ellington on , Saturday the Hawke’s Bay represen- I tative team who are in quest of the Ranfurly Shield, beat Wellington by 13 points to 12. The match was played under perfect conditions and before a crowd numbering 15,000 odd. In the early stages it looked like ‘ being an easy win for the Bay, P. Reid scoring two tries between the posts in the first few minutes, both being converted by Bradley. Thereafter, however, AA 7 ellington held their opponents, and before the whistle sounded half-time had scored six points, a penalty goal by Crisp and a try by Jones. Early in the second spell Wellington still further improved their position with a try by Edwards which was not converted, and there was a difference of only one point in the totals. Then Fox (Hawke’s Bay) staged a great run, practically the whole length of the field, and outpaced his opponents to touch down. Shortly afterwards Tindill closed the gap again' with, a fine try. With 15 minutes to go both sides were fighting hard, but no further score was recorded, Hawke’s Bay leaving the field the winners by a margin of one point. Prior to the commencement of play both teams were introduced to his Excellency the Governor - General, Lord Galway. PROGRAMME OF THE TOUR. Other fixtures of the Hawke’s Bay representatives are as follow: August 24th, v. Canterbury, at Lancaster Park, Christchurch. August 27th, v. Southland, at Rugby Park, Invercargill. August 31st, v. Otago, at Carisbrook, Dunedin. September 3rd, v. South Canterbury, at Timaru. RUGBY IN FIJI. FIRST TEST RESULTS IN A DRAAY, SUVA, August 20. In the first test between the touring Maori Rugby team and Fiji the result was a draw, each side scoring one penalty goal. The game wa* confined to the ter-

wards who, in a terrific tussle, proved that there was little to pick and choose between the two packs. Both sides attempted to open up the play, hut deadly tackling nullified all such efforts. The Maori full-back, Wirepa, played a splendid game. Howell (captain), was the pivot of the Maori side. McDonald, Matthews, and Kenny were conspicuous in a fine pack.
