A disastrous fire, causing damage estimated to total well over £IOO,OOO, swept through a four-storeyed building and theatre block near the intersection of Colombo and Gloucester streets, in the heart of Christchurch, early this morning. Apparently starting in the studios of Radio Station 3ZB, the fire spread rapidly through McDuff’s department store 'and into the State Theatre building. The radio station, the large department shop, the theatre and nine other shops in the theatre block were gutted. The buildings involved were valued at more than £200,000. Why run the risk?
