Sir Joseph Ward has been compelled to absent himself from the House for the past few days owing to an attack of influenza. We are pleased to be able to state that the reported wounding of Trooper W. Flynn was incorrect. The report gained currency owing to the mis-reading of a post-card. Mr Harry T. Limbrick, of the Telephone Exchange, was presented by the staff with a smoker’s outfit. Mr Limbrick leaves for Trentham on Monday morning. Yesterday afternoon the scholars of both the primary and the secondary departments of the District High School were assembled in the playground for the purpose of bidding farewell to the assistant master, Mr E. Rowntree, who has been accepted for active service. Mr W. Smith, headmaster, expressed regret at losing the services of such an efficient and popular teacher, paid tribute to the earnestness and thoroughness with which he performed his duties, and wished him all the luck possible. On behalf of the scholars he handed Mr Rowntree a cheque for £2 with which to purchase something that would remind him of his association with the school. In reply Mr Rowntree expressed his deep appreciation of the spirit which had prompted the gift and said he would purchase something before he left Waipawa which would assist him to retain recollections of a very pleasant time spent here. Three rousing cheers were given by the scholars for their departing master.
