LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The annual meeting and social in connection with the Anglican Church, Otane, will be held on Friday next. There will be a public tea at 6 o’clock, to be followed by a social. A reminder is given of the sale of farm stock to be held by De Peliehet, McLeod and Co. on Monday at Mr E. Bradley’s farm, Tamumu. The sale commences at noon.

The public farewell to the local recruits of the Nineteenth Reinforcements will take place on Monday morning, the Municipal Band, National Reserve, and school children mustering at the post-office at 10 o’clock. The following men will entrain here: —Messrs D. Williams, W. J. Boon, J. H. Robinson, H. T. Limbrick, W. Carson, L. A. Brothington (Tikokino), G. Summersby (Tikokino), F. Reeves (Blackburn), E. Adams (Blackburn), S. J. Alder (Blackburn). Mr E. Rowntree left last evening. “Freezing companies will be accorded the same treatment as other taxpayers who have recently commenced operations. No separate special concession can be granted to them,” was the reply made in the House on behalf of the Minister for Finance (the Right Hon. Sir J. G. Ward) to a question by Mr G. Hunter (Waipawa), as to whether he would favorably consider the question of making some concession in the amount of excess profits to be payable under the Finance Bill by freezing companies which had recently started operations.

The Prime Minister, chairman of the Recruiting Board, has received the following telegram from the president of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union: —“We, the members of the Greymouth Port Waterside Workers’ Union, endorse the action of the Government in passing the National Service Bill. We consider it the best and fairest method of reaching eligible persons who should serve their King and Empire. —(Signed) James McGinley, president.” Business was fairly brisk at the Ladies’ Patriotic Committee’s shop to-day, the ladies in charge being Mrs L. Next Saturday will be the men’s Red Cross day, and as big business will be doing there will be a change of venue to the Municipal Concert Hall.
