THE ANZACS.

AUSTRALIANS’ FIRST BRUSH. A NIGHT RUSH. (Special from the N.Z. Official War Correspondent). May 7th. A small section of the Australian force has had its first brush with the Germans. After a heavy bombardment lasting an hour and a quarter the enemy at night rushed the trenches in a small salient. They obtained a temporary footing, but after some hard hand fighting retreated to their own trenches, not having gained any ground. Regarding the New Zealanders there is nothing new to report. NEW ZEALANDERS ARRIVE. IN THE TRENCHES. LONDON, May 12. The New Zealanders were the last arrivals in France. They entered the front trenches at an important point on the British front a few days ago. They are well supported by artillery. So far they have had only minor bouts with the Germans, but expect as they are new to this type of fighting to he favored with some special German frightfulness. They are prepared for any emergency. A New Zealander on furlough said: “We are all right. If you hear that the Germans have occupied town, you will know that all the New Zeaianders have been taken prisoner.”
