MAYOR’S HONORARIUM

AN APPRECIATION. After the ordinary business had been dealt with at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor was asked to retire and Cr. Hunt took the chair. He stated that this was the last meeting of the Council before the end of the financial year and the meeting at which they had to decide the Mayor’s honorarium. He thought that the same amount as last year, £6O, should be voted. Councillors agreed, and on the motion of Cr. Brewer, seconded by Cr. Bloor*it was unanimously decided to vote the Mayor an honorarium of £6O. Cr. Hunt said he would like authority to convey to the Mayor the Council’s appreciation of his services during the past year, rendered under extremely trying conditions, on account of Mr Limbrick’s illness. Councillors unanimously approved this, and the Mayor was recalled. Addressing the Mayor Cr. Hunt acquainted him with the decision of the Council in respect to the honorarium and the vote of appreciation. Councillors, he said, hoped that in the coming year Mr Limbrick would enjoy much better health. Cr. Hunt also appealed to members of the Council to stand by the Mayor on the occasion of any public function. There were times when they did not realise their responsibilities as much as they should. There may be some difference of opinion amongst them as to the Mayor’s policy, but there could be no difference of opinion in regard to their own responsibilities. Mr Limbrick, in acknowledging the Council’s vote and their expression of appreciation, said he was greatly indebted to the Council, the town clerk and the overseer for the manner in which they had assisted him in the borough work. He appreciated Cr. Hunt’s kindly remarks concerning his health, and hoped he would be able to do more justice to his position in the coming year. But whether his health was good or bad at the expiration of his term of office, nothing would induce him to accept nomination for a further term. Tie proposed to make a statement of the Council’s financial position at the next meeting, when there would be some important matters to discuss.
