I beg to report that during the past month there were two new services put in, one for Mr A. Pellow, Ruataniwha street, and one for Mrs Grant, Bennett street. I also take this opportunity of resigning my position as manager of the gasworks. In reference to the manager’s resignation the Mayor stated that there had been some friction between Mr Wilkins and Mr Talbot, and the resignation was the outcome.—On the. motion of Cr. Hunt, seconded by Cr. Pellow, the resignation was accepted, and authority was given to the Gas Committee to invite applications for the position, also to give the manager a testimonial. GAS COMMITTEE. The Gas Committee reported as under:— We beg to recommend having invited tenders for the painting of the holder, scrubber and purifiers and accepted Mr G. Miller’s tender of £ll. In accordance with resolution passed at the September meeting of the Council, the time lias arrived for the consideration of the price of gas to consumers, but in view of the heavy expense to be incurred during the ensuing year in repairs to retorts, etc., and increase of wages and cost of coal, we recommend that the price remain as at present. Adopted. GENERAL. Cr. Hunt drew attention to the condition of the storeroom under the stage of the theatre. A considerable portion of the floor was under water and a lot of stage properties were being ruined. He suggested that it should be drained or a wooden floor put in.—The matter was referred to the Theatre Committee. Authority was given to the Finance Committee to arrange with the bank for an overdraft of £I2OO. Cr. Bloor asked for information as to the control of the Fire Brigade.— Cr. Brewer said the condition of the station was anything but creditable.— The Mayor and Cr. Hunt to make inquiries and report. The following pay-sheet was passed for payment:—General account £147 17s 4d, waterworks £lB 7s 3d, gasworks £147 13s Od, roads loan account £53 10s 2d, drainage construction £8 17s 8d; total, £376 6s 2d. On Cr. Bloor’s suggestion it was decided to ask the Railway Department to repair the fence abutting on the main road to the station. Cr. Witherow voiced a complaint of noxious smells arising from the vent near Mr Kelly’s.—The overseer stated that it had been sealed up and everything possible done to prevent a nuisance. He was of opinion that the smell came from the vent in the railway yards, which was not high enough. After dealing with other business, reported in another column, the Council adjourned.
