Concert at Patangata
(from a correspondent)
On Wednesday, 27th January, it was my lot to be present at a smoke concert and presentation given by the people of Oero and Patangata to Mr and Mrs McPherson, of the Patangata Hotel. There were present about thirty of the residents and station hands, and a better behaved, jolly and orderly lot of gentlemen it has never been my lot to meet. After a few loyal toasts had been done justice to, the presentation of a beautiful—in fact the very best that could be obtained in Napier—tea Rervice was made by Mr D. Sutherland, who, in a short, wellchosen speech, referred to Mrs and Mr McPherson in high terms, and only giving them the credit which they so justly merit. The applause which followed justified Mr Sutherland’s remarks re the esteem in which the host and hostess were held by those present. Mr Percy, the chairman, responded on behalf of Mr and Mrs McPherson in a few remarks. It took the host all his time to say thank you, and the hostess looked very pleased, but never a word she spoke—could not if she tried. The Royal Family, Army, Navy, Pastoral and Agricultural, Press, and the Ladies, were drunk and duly responded to. A hearty toast was drunk to Mr Percy, the chairman, who feelingly responded. Songs were given throughout the evening by the Wedd brothers, who sing with taste. Mr W. Fletcher pleased the company with his comic song. In fact everyone contributed in song or recitation, and a very pleasant evening was spent, the company breaking up at daylight with “ Auld lang Syne ” by all hands, after giving the host and hostess three ringing cheers.
