HAWKE’S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

Napier, September 21. The Board met at 10 a.m. Present: J. D. Ormond, Esq., (in the chair), Messrs Tanner, Harding, Locke, Williams, Sutton, Lee and Captain Russell. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read and considered : From the chairman Onga Onga School Committee, stating that the chimney at the Makaretu school house had been blown down by the late gale, and asking for its re-erection. The work was authorised. From the Chairman of the Danevirk School Committee, asking the Board to confirm the following resolution passed at the last Committee meeting : —“ That owing, to a severe epidemic in the district, the attendance at the school has decreased considerably, and that the teacher be not affected thereby, this committee respectfully requests that the Board pay the teacher’s salary for September according to the average for July.” Granted. From the Hampden School Committee, applying for blinds and dooor mats. It was decided to supply the blinds, but the secretary was instructed to inform the committee that the mats must be provided out of the funds at their disposal. From the Hampden School Com-

mittee, stating that the average attendance had decreased, and requesting that the teacher’s salary be not affected thereby. It was decided that, M the decreiwe in ftttendence only

affected the master’s salary to the extent of 2s 6d, the request be not granted. From the Patangata School Committee, recommending the appointment of Miss Teycheune as assistant mistress at the Kaikora school. The appointment was confirmed. From fourteen householders at Patangata, requesting that the district be divided, and that a Gommittee be elected for both the Kaikora and Patangata schools. The request was granted, and the secretary was authorised to make the necessary alterations.

From the Porangahau School Committee, requesting that the school building be so altered as to make a comfortable dwelling for the master. The Committee were authorised to call for tenders for the work, to be carried out during the summer months. The following report of the Architect was read and adopted :—The additions to Hampden school are now completed. The roof of the old teacher’s house is in a very bad state of repair, the greater part of the shingles being completely rotten, and recommending its re-shingling. The cost would be between £ls and £l6. The contractors for the Wallingford school have commenced work. The contractor for the Havelock school is making very satisfactory progress with his work, and should complete the building before the next meeting of the Board. The Petane school is weather-boarded and roofed in. Plans were placed on the table of a new schoolmaster’s residence at Makaretu.
