DAMAGED SHEEP SKINS A CHANGE IN THE SYSTEM URGED At the last meeting of the Northern King Country Sub-Provincial Executive of the. Farmers’ Union, dissatisfaction was expressed at the fact that the deductions of 2 l/8d per lb made in respect of damaged sheepskins were computed on the gross weight of the skin plus the slipe wool, and that the full deductions was very often greater than the whole amount payable for the skin apart from the wool, which was, of'course, unaffected. The Minister of Marketing, replying to enquiries as to why this should be so, wrote to the Executive at its meeting at Te Kuiti recently that the contract with the United Kingdom was that skins be valued at skin and slipe wool prices, but that deductions made in respect to damaged skins were made from the total weight of pelt and wool. Dissatisfaction with the position was expressed, the opinion being voiced that it paid a farmer handsomely to shear skins/ while the chairman (Mr V. W. Simms) said that at Frankton for the first time he had seen shorn fat sheep at the sale in early August, showing the trend resulting from the unsatisfactory position regarding payment for slipe wool on skins. The matter is to be followed up.
