TOWN PLANNING

OPERATION OF ACT. TWENTY-ONE SUGGESTED DISTRICTS. Arising out of a communication anont a conference of local body representatives in the future to consider the operation of the proposed Town Planning Act, the subject was briefly discussed at the monthly meeting . of the Matamata County Council on Friday. The chairman (Cr J. W. Anderson) said that previously it was thought the Act would operate in 1930, but it was not now likely it would come into being until 1932.

The county would be subject to a rate of l-50d in the £ for the expenses of drawing up maps, plans, etc. The board would include three members, with one counties' representative. Cr Anderson said that when the town planning scheme had first been mooted he did not think it would be of much benefit to the county, but he had since changed his mind. In its application to roads alone it would be of vital concern to the council. It had been suggested that the Dominion be divided into 21 districts, and it appeared likely that-the county would be included in a South Auckland district from Mercer to Taumamnui. The chairman said the scheme as a whole was highly desirable, and had it been in operation in earlier years much of the difficulties facing local bodies to-day would have been obviated. He thought that those directly interested might be planning just a little too far ahead. It would be wise to plan for about ten years ahead. Councillors wore unanimous that town planning could not be brought into force too soon.
