SCHOOL OPENING

AT TAOTAOROA. A SOCIAL EVENING. (Own Correspondent). The final function in connection with the official opening of the Taotaoroa school took place on Friday evening, when a social and dance was held in the school. The building was packed to overflowing with settlers and their families, and quite a number of visitors attended from Cambridge and surrounding districts. Dancing and games were the features of the evening’s entertainment, and there was'not. a dull moment, the young- people especially having a very enjoyable time. Musical items were given by Mr and Miss Jones, of Cambridge, and were very much appreciated; songs were rendered by Mrs Grantham and Mr T. Bruce, while Mr ,T. Bruce gave a humorous recitation. Mr R. S. Alford, president of the entertainment committee, acted as M.C., and was ably assisted by the master, Mr Hunter. The ladies of the district provided a dainty supper, which was done full justice to. Altogether it was a most enjoyable evening and a fitting ending to a happy day. Mr Alford, in a few wellchosen words, thanked all who had assisted in organising and .carrying out the various duties in connection with the official opening of the new school. Special thanks were accorded the ladies for the splendid way they had catered, and to Mr F. Kelly, the school manager, for his long and persistent efforts with the department, culminating in the presence of the new school. The hearty singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought to a close a day that will be long remembered by the people of Taotaoroa.
