MANGAONUI STREAM

IN NEGLECTED STATE. DANGER TO BRIDGE. At the monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council held on Tuesday considerable discussion was entered into over the state of the Mangaonui stream and to what parties were responsible and in what proportion the cost of cleaning and straightening this stream should be divided. A communication from the Minister of Public Works stated that he had made available a grant of £3OO (£ for £) in response to the county's request. This sum would be available as soon as the county's proposals had been approved of by the district engineer at Auckland.

The Chairman (Mr T. Hinton) reported on a meeting that had been held with the members of the various Drainage boards concerned, and stated that an offer had been made to them for the county to provide £2OO, and the drainage boards £IOO. However, it had been later ascertained that the Fencourt Board was opposed to the scheme and the Eureka Board was doing nothing either. Earlier in the meeting it had been decided by a four to three vote that the_ council find £IOO, and the two ridings concerned (Cambridge and Tauwhare) be responsible for £SO each, the other £IOO to be raised by the combined Eureka, Hautapu .and Fencourt Drainage Boards. However, after the above advice had been received, it was decided to rescind this previous offer, and th,at the Government be asked to set up a Commission to go into the matter. Prior to the commission taking action, plans and specifications will be prepared and forwarded to the drainage boards concerned, with the allocated amounts that the county thinks each Board should be prepared to pay. Failing action on this, the Commission will become active.
