SWIMMING

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

CHILDREN’S GREAT AFTERNOON,

Yesterday was a red letter day with the children of the District High School, for it marked the occasion of the annual swimming sports, an event that has been looked forward to for many days. Yesterday was an ideal day and both swimmers and spectators enjoyed the fixture to the full. By their teachers the children were marshalled into the bath to the number of about 600, while there was also a good attendance of parents. The lengthy programme of about 50 events was got through promptly and it provided a splendid afternoon’s entertainment for all present. It was a fine sight to see the children from the primers to the secondary department competing in the various events, and taking their wins or losses in the fine spirit that is a feature of all juvenile competitions in this Dominion. The swimming as a whole was excellent, while the many closely contested races was a tributo to the handicapper, Mr F. H. Green. Chairman’s Remarks. During the course of the programme the School Committee chairman (Mr A. N. Macky) extended very hearty thanks to the parents for coming along and encouraging the children. Mr Macky referred to the value of the natatorial art as a healthy exercise and one in which the finest sporting spirit was developed. He referred to the fact that,. Cambridge had always held its own in the encouragement of young children to swim. He heartily thanked the, Swimming Club officials for the help, they always gave with 'the school’s .annual sports, an<i the good .work the club was doing in encouraging swimming generally. Mr Macky also thanked an expupil of the secondary department, Mr Selwyn Speight, secretary of the Swimming Club, for the donation of a chal-, lenge cup for a secondary boys’ championship. It was a gracious act on the part of Selwyn to not forget his school after leaving for the workaday world, said Mr Macky. He concluded by paying a tribute to tho services of Mr Green, as handicapper, and also instructor of the children; also to the headmaster (Mr P. G. Lewis) and his staff and to all who had assisted to make the sports such a success again this year.
