WATER SUPPLY

RETICULATING THE BOROUGH.

PROGRESS OF THE WORK. j When the council’s schome of reticulating the borough is ultimately completed. and the new gravitation water supply from Maungatautari is available to all parts, Cambridge will unundoubtcdly possess a service that will compare more than favourably with any other borough of its size in the province. The scheme as laid down by the present council is a comprehensive one and up to the present good progress lias been made with the work.

With the completion of the main pipe-line through Victoria Street the council immediately concentrated on reticulating adjacent streets, and already new and larger mains have been laid in several of the side streets., A start was made at the intersection of Fort and Victoria Streets. Down the former street a now 4in. main lias been laid to the Duke Street hill corner, connecting with the existing Duke Street main to Carter’s corner. Anzac Street lias' also been completed with a 4in. main, from which a similar size main lias been taken along Alpha Street and connected with the lOin. main in Victoria Street. Kirkwood Street and the. eastern end of Queen Street have also been linked up with the principal main at the intersection of Queen and Victoria Streets. Now mains have been taken along Lake Street to Ferguson's corner; also along Queen Street to as far as the Baptist Church. Other streets completed to date include Bryce, Alpha and Dick Streets, very small pipes being replaced by larger ones. Inspected this week in company with the borough engineer (Air T. Dix) our reporter observed .that fire plugs are being put in well within the requirements of .the Fire Underwriters’ Association. Another feature of the new reticulating that will be greatly appreciated by ratepayers and householders alike is the excellent system of valve installation. Not-only have valves been installed on the main pipe-line in Victoria Street, but also at all other important intersections of streets. When the whole scheme is complete it will be p'ossiblc to shut off the water in the main pipe-line in Victoria Street or to retain same and to isolate any one of the small groups of streets or portions of the borough. The value of this system must be immediately apparent. For instance, in the event of trouble occurring on the pipe-line in the main street and a fire taking place in Anzac Street, water would still be available per the Fort Street route, or to the other side of the town from the Wilson Street route line. Each group of streets or portions of the borough are, being provided with valves in the mains, so that if trouble occurs in one portion the others will not be affected. It is an excellent provision and the council are to be heartily commended for the foresight that is being exhibited as the work progresses. Completing the Scheme. The council are hopeful that, the loan money available will be sufficient to complete the whole of the borough reticulation.' At the present time the pipes have been ordered for the following work:—Commencing at the Hamilton Road eornei- new mains will be taken' along tho main road to Hall Street and to Williams Street. From tho latter the system will connect up with the existing 4in. main in Bowen Street. Eventually when the scheme or reticulation is complete all that portion of the borough to the. north of Hamilton Road and the Domain will be served from adequate mains with very generous provision in tho way of valves and fire plugs. As stated at a recent meeting of the council by His Worship tho Mayor (Mr T. F. Richards), it would be the policy of the council —if still in office—to supply water to residents on tho outskirts of the borough, subject to money beingavailable and if sufficient revenue from such installations were in sight.
