DRINKING BY WOMEN.

LICENSING BENCH TAKES ACTION

The Christehureh Licensing Committee has taken a firm stand on the mattor of facilities being granted for women to drink in hotels. At yesterday’s meeting the chairman, Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., said the Committee was surprised to find several hotels provided special facilities for women. It was not necessary to discuss tho question of women being entitled to drink as well as men, but there would have to be certain rules. The Committee had set its face against facilities which would encourage women to stay about hotels drinking. “The Committee has absolutely set its face against it,” .concluded Mr Widdowson. The Chamber of Commerce last night unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Government to make provision in the Estimates at the ensuing session for immediate construction of the Tana-atua-Opotiki section of the East Coast railway, which was authorised by Parliament nine years ago. (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH,'this day. A Christchurch solicitor, Lionel Lancelot Hitchings, has been arrested at Rakaia on a charge of embezzlement. Hitchings is a young married man. He was formerly employed by Messrs Duncan, Cotterill and Co. He is charged with fraudulently failing to account for money received by him. The first charge involves a sum of £ls. Other charges arc being laid. A DIRTY DAIRY. OWNER FINED £lO. (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 6. In the Magistrate’s Court, to-day John Telford, dairyman, was fined £lO for failure to keep his dairy clean. The evidence showed that samples of milk from defendant’s dairy disclosed dirt.
