WATER SUPPLY

AND PERMANENT ROADS £-*().0()0 LOAN SUGGESTED At last .night’s Borough Council mcM: i ng, His Worship the Mayor (Mr 0. H. .Priestley) said that two matters the Council would need to face immediately were improvements to the water supply and some permanent reading scheme. All the Councillors were aware that under the present conditions the Council could make no more connections with the water supply, they could not extend their drainage scheme, the supply was totally inadequate for firefighting purposes, and the pumps now used were out of date. He considered the only way to cope with these demands was to go in for a gravitation water supply. Plans had been prepared years ago for a gravitation supply from Maungakawn, and lie thought these should be looked into.

The Mayor sail! he also thought all the main road* in the Borough should he laid down in bitumen. It was no use going on continually putting sand on the roads —they wanted something more permanent. They should make use of the metal obtainable at To Miro. To cover the cost of these two schemes he suggested the raising of a £,10.000 loan. He thought no objection would be raised to this by the ratepayers. The cost of pumping water under ithe present system would pay the interest on a £‘25,000 loan. The Mayor said he was not putting this scheme as a definite proposal, but only as a suggestion for the Councillors to think over, so that it could be discussed at next meeting. •:
