A MYSTERIOUS CRIME

Mr Barnett Bauer, the well-known diamond merchant, was discovered in his otlice at Modern Chambers, Col-lins-streot, last evening with his skull fractured in several places. minutes before the body was discovered found the door of the office locked. No one in the building heard any suspicious sounds. . (Received June 10, 10.50 a.m.) | After Bauer, the diamond merchant was murdered, Cutler,' a jeweller in Little Collins-strect, informed the police that a man called at his shop and inquired for Bauer’s address a few days ago. ‘ The description of the man corresponded with that of a well-known Victorian criminal, and suspicion points to the 'fact that the fugitive has gone to Sydney. This idea tits in with a story that a man was seen to leave the building in a violent hurry a few minutes live o’clock and hailed a cab, telling the cabman to drive past Spencer-street.
