FIRE AT KIHIKIHI.
Mbs Anderson’s boardinghouse was destroyed by fire about 12 o’clock on inday night. AH the occupants were asleep, and it was with some difficulty that Mrs Anderson was got out of the house. Ihe tire originated in one of the bedrooms, which was unoccupied, and its origin np* pears to be shrouded in mystery. The building was insured for £2OO, -which, unfortunately, would not restore a buildin" half its size; but there was no insurance on the furniture. Practically nothing was saved. Mrs Anderson lost the whole of her wearing apparel and jewe - lery, and amongst the other sufferers were :-Stock inspector Kerr, all his possessions; Miss Boden, ciothiug and some cash ; Miss Wilson, clothing and cash: Mr Hanna, some clothing: Mr Hargreaves, some packages whicii were left for safe keeping ; Mr Kidd, clothing. Mr H. Addington, rabbiter, was a heavy loser, having lost his portmanteau containing his watch and a missive gold chain and locket, clothing, and a lot of documents, one io particular being a paper entitling him to a small annuity under the will of an aunt, which, of course, it will be difficult to replace. Unfortunately there were only a few helpers at the earlier stage of the fire to render assistance, and as others rolled up they were busy with buckets of water protecting the Alpha Hotel, consequently the fire was fast destroying everything but a few chairs aud some sundries Much sympathy is extended to Mrs Anderson from everybody in the district, many of whom trust that a search - ing enquiry will take place as to the origin of the fire. Mrs Anderson before retiring to bed always looks through the passages herself and is noted as a very careful housekeeper. This is the second fire within a very short period we having recently lost the Town Hall.
