THE FRUIT INDUSTRY .
(uy telegraph—pbess association). Ouhibtohdeoh, This Day. Mr Blackmoee, Government Pomologist, states, in connection with grading, that the Government should deal with the matter by a Grading Bill on the lines of the Act in force in Canada, making it compulsory to grade to size, and marking the grade oh each case. If New Zealand growers desired a higher price they must imitate their competitors in Australia. He said the Government should pass an Orchards and Pests Bill to prevent the distribution of infected fruits and compel growers to take the necessary preventive measures. In order to give an impetus to fruit culture in Christchurch district Mr Blaokmore said he would suggest that the Government give a guarantee of a penny per pound on a shipment of 20,000 cases of apples to England, the freight to be 3s 6d per ease, so that if the fruit brought 8a 6d per case the grower would receive a penny per pound. A guarantee was required, because a considerable number of growers could not afford to pay freight.
