MEETING AT CARTERTON.

(“The Age” Special.)

The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held yesterday. There was a large attendance of members and the president, Miss O. Wolters, was in the chair. Mrs. A. Pink and Mrs. H. J. Brown were nominated as delegates to attend the BushWairarapa Federation half-yearly meeting at Pahiatua on October 30. It* was announced that Mrs. Alfred Watt, president of the Associated Country Women of the World, would be present at St. Matthew’s Parish Hall, Masterton, on Saturday, October 31, and the president requested as many members as possible to attend on that occasion. The Garden Circle forwarded £3 8s lid, being net proceeds from the disposal of a supper cloth. The Circle was thanked heartily for its donation. The Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League wrote requesting the Institute to assist it by offering its hand-made articles for sale. It was decided to accede to this request and to send for a parcel of goods to be on sale at the next meeting. The Martinborough Institute forwarded an invitation for members to attend its seventh birthday party on Thursday, November 5. It was decided to purchase 10s worth of health stamps. An appeal was received from the Leper Station for articles for Christmas distribution. The president requested members to assist where possible and on the suggestion of Mrs. H. B. Keenan it was decided that the Institute donate 10s in cash, several members offering to supplement this with a further donation. Miss Wolters reminded members of the concert to be given by the Blind Institute Band on October 25. Offers to billet members of the band were invited. It was announced that Mrs. A. Pink had been appointed as secretary in succession to Mrs. G. Johnston. Mrs. L. Sorenson and Mrs. Hume have been added to the committee, replacing two retiring members. It was decided to •hold a Husbands’ Night in November, the date to be fixed by a committee

set up. A humorous elocutionary item was given by Mrs. M. Barry. A novel competition was won by Mrs. C. E. Stevens. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. A. Pink for providing the prize. Competition winners were (article costing not more than Is): Prettiest, Mrs. Golder, 1; Miss Wolters, 2; most novel, Mrs. Golder, 1; Mrs. K. Goodin, 2. Miss C. Cooper, of Gladstone, was the judge nnd was presented with a shoulder spray. Next month’s competition will be for best article made from one yard of cretonne and the best four pieces of shortbread. Two demonstrations were given of the making of soft toys. Captain Bycroft showed how to make nigger dolls and Mrs. H. M. B. Trapp how to make black cats from old stock-

ings. Both demonstrators were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to open future 'meetings at two o’clock instead of 2.15.
