DISTRICT NEWS.
SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. PIRINOA. (“The Age” Special.) The weekly meeting of the Mutual Association was held on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance of members and friends. Several vocal and instrumental items were given. Flounders are being netted al the Lake Ferry in large numbers. Whitebait are not so plentiful. Mr. Taurau, who has bean visiting the Minawatu district, has returned home. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald, who are taking up their residence in this district, ill arrive to-day. Mr. McDonald takes over the managership of the Raho Ruru Estatp. Mrs. W. Hume will shortly leave the district for the South Island, where she will stay for a time with har sister, Mrs. Waddell, Bluff. Mrs. Hume will probably take up her permanent residence in Wellington. A large number of ladies of the district assembled at the Hall on Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being an afternoon for Mrs. C. E. Latham, who is leaving the district to take up her residence in Wellington. Mrs. Latham has lived in this district for 21 years and during that period has devoted much time to the social activities of the community. She was a valued member of the local branch of the Women’s Institute and 1 an enthusiastic member of the Golf Club. During an interval Mrs. W. Hume spoke in high terms of the work done in the district by their guest and expressed the regret felt at her impending departure. Wishing Mrs. Latham all happiness in her new home, Mrs. Hume then presented her with a dressing set as a slight token of esteem from the ladies of the district. Mrs. Latham, in reply, expressed her gratitude for the sentiments expressed by Mrs. Hume on behalf of the ladies of the district. Yesterday Mrs. Latham was the guest of the local branch of the Women’s Institute. Vocal items were given by Miss Te Maari, who also led in conjunction with Mrs. Lovegrove, a community sing. Miss M. Te Whaiti presided at the piano.
The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Messrs Atkinson (chairman), Sutton (secretary), Mclntosh, Wellington and Carter. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Federation re membership. The letter was received. Several accounts were passed for payment. Business in connection with improvements to the school ground and other matters affecting the school was dealt with.
Mr. Donald Mclntosh has purchased the property on which, stands the new residence erected by the late Mr. C. E. Latham.
