HADLOW SCHOOL.

FORMATION OF RHYTHM BAND PROPOSED. CONCERT BY PUPILS & OTHERS. The pupils of Hadlow School, assisted by Miss Edith Ralph (soprano), Mr. Stuart Petersen (violinist), and Mr. Gilmour McConnell (pianist), recently presented a most Attractive and enjoyable concert to raise sufficient funds to purchase instruments for the formation of a Rhythm Band. These bands are extremely popular in English schools, and several New Zealand colleges have established them. There was a good attendance, the audience showing in no uncertain manner its appreciation of each item rendered. A feature of the programme was the delightful singing by the school choir. The boys* songs were varied, consisting of choruses, part songs and unison songs, and each was rendered with expression and excellent enunciation. The dramatic item, a short play entitled “Forget-me-nots,”.was also very well received.

The programme was as follows: — School chorus, “ Boney was a Warrior;” piano solo, M As You Like It;” recitation, “In the Fashion,” lower school; song, “The Merry Peasant,” A. Betts; choir, “The Blue Danube” and “The Fairy Glade,” part songs; recitation, “The Snowdrop/’ Redman mi; violin solos, “On Wings of Song” and “Liebslied,” Mr. S. Petersen; play, “Forget-me-nots,” J. Humphries, P. Norman, S. Wardell, A. Betts, M. Kight; choir, “The End of the Road” and “The Sergeant-Major’s on Parade,” choruses; recitation, “The Horsemen,” upper school; songs, “Spring’s Song” and “Blacksmith’s Song,” Miss E. Ralph; dance, selected, Valerie Don; recitation, “Tubal Cain,” M. Kight; pianoforte, “Ballade in A Flat,” “Alt Wien,” Mr. G. McConnell; choir, “Jolly Round Pond,” unison song; school chorus, “The Capstan Bar/’ The accompanists were Miss M. Holmwood and Mr. Gilmour McConnell. The Principal (Mr. A. W. Don) thanked the artists who had assisted the school in presenting the concert, and also stated briefly the aims and objects of the Rhythm Band.
