CRAWFORD & QUIST.

ENGLISH PAIR DEFEATED IN DOUBLES* SOME FINE OVERHEAD WORK BY AUSTRALIANS. DAVIS CUP COMPETITION , LONDON, Jujy 27. ' The doubles in the challenge round of the Davis Cup competition resulted: J. H. Crawford and A. K. Quist (Australia) beat G. P. Hughes and 0. R. D. Tuckey (Great Britain), 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8. The weather was fine and the .Wimbledon centre court was half full Fine overhead work by the Australians gave them an early lead of 2-1 in the first set. All four were serving splendidly and the games went with service, the Australians capturing the set at 6-4. Much sparkling overhead play also featured in the second set. The games were level at 2-2 and then Tuckey, with brilliant interceptions and terriffic smashes, enabled England to win fpur games in a row for the set. The games went with service to 5-5 in the third set. This was due to good serving by all four resulting in the receivers being forced to resort to tosses, which were dispatched for winners. Hughes, however, dropped his service, giving the Australians a 6-5 lead, and Quist won on his service after two deuces. The Englishmen were leading 5-2 in the fourth set and then the Australians found a hole in. the British defence, Quist and Crawford scoring with passing sideline shots. The Australians were now driving strongly and mixing their play cleverly. They took the next four games and led 6-5. Quist then lost his service, chiefly through netting soft returns. Britain had the lead at 7-6 and 8-7, but the Australians equalised each time with love games on service. Tuckey was foot-faulted in the seventeenth game, which he lost, and, after * dropping one set point in the next game, Quist smashed a winner, giving the Australians the match. Australia owed its victory to superior steadiness also to better positional play due to greater experience in playing together, which the Englishmen lacked. Crawford was the brains of the Australians and was chiefly effective in getting the English- I men out of position.
